Chronic Stress & the Healing Block
When we experience chronic stress, the body stays in fight-or-flight mode (sympathetic nervous system activation).
Stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline remain elevated. Over time this:
Suppresses immunity
Slows digestion
Increases inflammation
Disrupts hormones
Impairs tissue repair
Disturbs sleep
The body prioritizes survival over healing.
Healing only happens in parasympathetic mode — the “rest, repair, and restore” state.
How to Shift into Repair Mode
1️⃣ Deep Belly Breathing (5–10 minutes daily)
Slow diaphragmatic breathing stimulates the vagus nerve, which signals safety to the brain.
Try:
Inhale 4 counts
Hold 2
Exhale 6–8 counts
Repeat for 5 minutes
Longer exhales = stronger relaxation response.
2️⃣ Meditation or Mindfulness
Regular practice:
Reduces cortisol
Improves emotional regulation
Strengthens prefrontal control over stress reactions
Even 10 minutes daily can rewire stress pathways over time.
3️⃣ Time in Nature
Nature exposure:
Lowers heart rate
Reduces blood pressure
Improves mood
Decreases rumination
Barefoot walking, sunlight, greenery
