There is a quiet joy in knowing that even the smallest act of kindness can light up someone’s darkest days. Sometimes, the greatest blessings in life come not from what we receive — but from what we give.
I am a psychologist and running an NGO in Agra Uttar Pradesh, I often meet people navigating emotional pain and silent battles.
I have spent years working as a psychologist in Agra, listening to stories of silent pain, hidden struggles, and emotional wounds that rarely find words. In my practice and through my NGO in Agra, I have met people battling loneliness, depression, loss, and abandonment. Yet nothing prepared me for the lesson I learned from one fragile woman in her seventies who lived alone in Shastripuram.
A few years ago, in Shastripuram, Agra, I heard about a woman in her 70s living all alone.
People said she barely had anything to eat. No steady support. No family nearby. No security. Just survival — one day at a time.
When I heard about her, I couldn’t ignore it.
I went to meet her.
What I saw that day is something I will never forget. She was fragile, weak, and living in extremely difficult conditions. The house was smaller than I expected. The door was old, slightly broken at the edges. When she opened it, I saw a frail figure standing before me — her eyes tired yet still carrying a quiet dignity.
It was painful to witness someone in the last phase of life fighting not for comfort — but for basic necessities like food, milk, and medicines.
In that moment, I made a silent promise to myself:
As long as I can, she will not remain helpless.
We arranged regular food support for her. I ensured she received milk every day. Whenever medicines were needed, we provided them.
For years, with consistency and care, we tried to make her survival not just possible — but dignified.
Today, she is no more.
Yes, there is sadness. A quiet heaviness in the heart knowing she is no longer there.
But there is also peace.
In her final years, she was not completely alone. Someone showed up. Someone cared.
Sometimes we cannot change the length of someone’s life.
But we can certainly change the quality of their remaining days.
And that matters.
A Question to All of Us
This experience has stayed with me deeply.
There are so many elderly individuals around us — abandoned, overlooked, silently struggling. As an NGO, we do what we can. But I truly believe collective compassion is stronger than individual effort.
So I want to ask you:
What more can we do for elderly people who are alone?
How can communities become more responsible and emotionally aware?
Are there structured, sustainable support models we can implement?
How can we ensure such cases do not go unnoticed?I'd welcome any suggestions you might have.
