THE RIVER CHALLENGE:(A Complete Activity to Understand Problem, Solution & Observational Learning)

๐ŸŽฏ Objectives

  • To help students understand learning through experience.

  • To explain Observational Learning in simple language.

  • To explore the role of cooperation and leadership in groups.

  • To develop problem-solving skills.

⏳ Time Required

35–40 minutes

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Group Size

15–40 students

๐Ÿงฐ Materials Required

  1. 8–10 A4 sheets or newspapers
  2. Tape
  3. Open space

๐Ÿ”ด Part 1: Presenting the Problem (5 Minutes)

Draw two parallel lines on the floor using tape.

Declare the space between them as the “river.”

Say to the students:

> “You must cross this dangerous river.

You only have these paper sheets to help you.

If anyone touches the floor, the whole team must start again.”

Rules:

1. Only 3–4 sheets may be used at one time.

2. A sheet cannot be pulled if someone is standing on it.

3. The entire team must cross together.

๐Ÿ”ด Part 2: Let Them Experience the Problem (10–15 Minutes)

Allow them to plan.

Then allow them to try.

Usually, the following happens:

The sheets seem insufficient.

Someone loses balance.

Arguments begin.

They have to restart multiple times.

Let them fail 2–3 times.

Do not give the solution immediately.

๐Ÿง  What Is the Real Problem?

After a few failed attempts, ask:

  1. “Why are you falling?”
  2. “Are the sheets less, or is the method wrong?”
  3. “Are you trying to build a fixed bridge?”

Allow them to reflect.

Then say clearly:

> “The problem is not lack of resources.

The problem is lack of strategy.”

๐ŸŸข Part 3: Teaching the Solution (5–7 Minutes)

Now demonstrate the correct strategy.

✅ Correct Strategy (Step-by-Step Solution)

Step 1: Form a Line

Ask all students to stand in a straight line.

Place 3–4 sheets in sequence.

The entire team stands on those sheets.

Step 2: The Moving Bridge Technique

The last person in the line picks up the sheet that no one is standing on.

That sheet is passed forward.

The first person places it ahead.

The entire team takes one step forward together.

Step 3: Repeat the Process

The sheet from the back moves to the front.

Everyone moves forward one step.

Continue this cycle until the entire team crosses.

This creates a moving bridge, not a fixed one.

๐Ÿ”ต Give a Simple Example

Tell students:

> “Imagine this is like a moving railway track.

The track disappears from behind and is created in front.”

Or:

> “Like ants walking in a line, passing something forward.”

๐Ÿง  Part 4: Immediate Psychological Explanation (10 Minutes)

Now ask:

  • Why did you fail at first?
  • Did it become easier after seeing the correct method?
  • Did everyone pay close attention?

Explain:

This is called Observational Learning.

This concept was explained by psychologist

Albert Bandura.

He showed that people can learn simply by watching others.

๐Ÿ“Œ Explain the 4 Simple Steps of Observational Learning:

1. Attention – Did you carefully observe?

2. Retention – Did you remember what you saw?

3. Reproduction – Could you perform it?

4. Motivation – Did you really want to succeed?

๐Ÿ” Problem vs Solution Analysis

Problem Solution

Sheets seemed insufficient

Sheets were enough; the method was wrong

Everyone rushed

Order and patience were needed

Arguments happened

Cooperation was required

No clear leadership Roles needed to be defined in a line

๐ŸŒŸ Deeper Learning

1️⃣ Leadership

The real leader was not necessarily the person in front —

sometimes the person at the back moving the sheet forward played the most important role.

2️⃣ Cooperation

Teamwork can achieve success without increasing resources.

3️⃣ Learning Style

We do not need to make every mistake ourselves.

We can learn faster by observing others.

๐ŸŽฏ Closing Message

Say to the students:

> “The river represents life’s challenges.

The paper sheets represent your resources.

The team represents cooperation.

If we observe carefully, stay patient, and work together,

we can cross any river.”

๐Ÿชž Reflection Questions

Ask students to respond:

  • “What role did I play in the team?”
  • “What did I learn today?”
  • “What will I do differently next time?”

This version ensures that:

✔ The problem is clearly understood

✔ The solution is demonstrated step-by-step

✔ The psychological concept is immediately connected

✔ The learning becomes practical and memorable.
